NRLR applauds Lutheran church committee challenge to policy barring pastors’ same-sex relationships

The National Religious Leadership Roundtable applauded the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) Hearing Committee’s Feb. 8 challenge to the church document that bars clergy who are in same-sex relationships. The committee encouraged church leaders to abandon the “bad policy.”

In the states: Washington

Registration is under way for Equality Day in Olympia, Wash., on Feb. 26. On Equality Day, people of faith will gather with allies and members of the LGBT community to lobby their legislators to end discrimination against LGBT people. A noontime rally, which typically draws more than 1,500 attendees, will provide legislators and others an opportunity to hear community leaders and prominent clergy speak in support of LGBT rights. Equality Day is hosted by Task Force state partner Equal Rights Washington, the Religious Coalition for Equality and other organizations.

New book: LGBT families face unequal treatment

Families headed by LGBT adults experience a wide range of unequal treatment under public policy, according to a book released today by the University of Michigan Press. Policy Issues Affecting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Families, co-authored by Task Force Policy Institute Director Sean Cahill and Sarah Tobias, provides a comprehensive account of the discrimination LGBT families confront and a look at how policy changes could make them more secure.

Panel: Civil Rites: Marriage, Partnerships and Same-Sex Unions

Task Force National Religious Leadership Roundtable member Mary Hunt and Task Force Communications Coordinator Pedro Julio Serrano are on a panel titled Civil Rites: Marriage, Partnerships and Same-Sex Unions, which will take place at the Weissman Center for Leadership and the Liberal Arts at Mount Holyoke College this Thursday evening.
